Territorialism

I was watching the Celebrity Apprentice last night with Mark. The two teams had to set up an art gallery and sell art. The team who sold the most, won the competition. One team had the front part of the gallery, the other had the back room. The back room team (who WON) had to work extra hard to get patrons to come back to their room - especially since Omarosa, the Apprentice-wanna-be that everyone loves to hate - was standing in front of the door with her arm out directing people into their room and preventing them from going into the other one.

At one point, Carol Alt essentially stole a big-money contact from the other team and closed a sale. That set off some wailing and gnashing of teeth at the end. Hey, this guy didn't buy anything from his contact. Their choice of art may not have been his "thing".

That got me thinking about the collaboration and territorialism that sometimes happens in our industry. I put it only in the context of The Apprentice to start the conversation. We certainly aren't in a cut-throat "reality" TV competition with other businesses around us. But, we ARE in business to sell products.

I have heard at times about different consultants from different direct sales companies coming together to hold events. I think it's likely to happen on National Scrapbook Day more than any other time as scrapbook and stamp companies all look for a way to celebrate. I have also heard at times, that although in THEORY everyone possesses the understanding that a customer is a customer that day, that occasionally, some consultants pop corks when they see their customers buying products from other consultants. I have also heard torrid tales of consultants from the same company laying hold of the same customer and essentially "duking" it out over that person.

That is so ridiculous and does nothing but make the consultants involved look bad.

First of all, customers have a right to buy from anyone they choose. If I buy a punch from you at an event, I probably don't consider you "my consultant" the way you consider me your customer. I might buy another punch from a different consultant 2 months later and that's my right. Now, if you win my loyalty through other means, then I'll probably bring my business back to you. Otherwise, you're no different to me (as a customer) than any other consultant.

Secondly, if you believe your customers should be (and can be) shielded from other businesses, then don't selfishly participate in group activities and think your customers will put on their blinders and only buy from you. And, don't get mad at the other businesses for selling to them. Again, customers have a right to buy from anyone they choose to. What you're really saying is that you don't like to acknowledge that your customers are buying from other people. It's hard for you to watch. But remember, the "customers" of the other business owners there are probably dropping some dollars with you, also. It goes both ways.

Third, don't expect to pack up your customer list at the end of the day and take it all home again. Some consultants get upset when other business owners at these events contact "their" customers. If someone buys something from me, they become MY customer also. At that point, I have every right to market to them and try to get them to buy more. Again, if you don't like that idea, don't sign up to go. And, remember also that you have a bunch of new customers in your files, too.

I think for far too long, retailers of all sorts in this industry have had the misguided idea that they should be the ONLY retailer a customer buys from. Therefore, collaboration has been largely absent in the industry. There might be 50 consultants from the same company in a 5 mile radius or 3 LSS's, but instead of coming together to be the rising tide that could lift all boats, they spend too much time infiltrating and tattling on each other.

I love the idea of group events and shop-hops. Let shine what makes your business unique and be confident enough in your own uniqueness so as to not feel threatened by competition! Embrace the fact that you are different. Even if you are a consultant and carry the same lines as 20 other women in your area, you can still make your business unique. The "IT" factor is YOU! Your customers become loyal to you not only because of what you carry, but because of the service you provide.

Collaboration is really what ScrapBiz is all about. Each business owner has their own "Secret Sauce", but overall, we freely talk about ideas that can help everyone. I love that part best about ScrapBiz! All opinions are recognized and welcomed. And, even if there is not agreement, there is no smacking.

Jumpin' For Joy! A ScrapBiz Remodel!

We affectionately and with tongue firmly planted in cheek, call the MEMBERS-ONLY part of ScrapBiz, "The Clubhouse". We like to imagine that it has a big blender and a lovely pool. Along with that comes a hot Latin Pool Boy (who disappears for weeks at a time when Ricky Martin is out on tour) and an efficient Russian Housekeeper named Olga. We don't have to do anything but work on our Biz's. Oh, and once in a while, Harry Connick Jr stops by to serenade us and Sergio, our news paper boy brings us the latest industry news. And let me tell you, Sergio is easy on the eyes...

That being said, the Clubhouse was in need of a little remodeling. So, I set my webmistress, Marcie, off to remodel. With HTML in hand, she re-did parts of the members-only site to make it easier to find the hundreds of business resources we have gathered for the last 5 years. Members are now able to find information much more quickly and efficiently. We are still tweaking and will be for a while, but it just makes ScrapBiz THAT MUCH BETTER. Seriously, you'd be amazed at what's there! If you're thinking of starting a business this winter or have one that you'd like to take to the next level, you will find ScrapBiz to be an amazing tool that can contribute greatly to your success!

Interesting...

A shout-out to my friend, Angie Pedersen, for pointing this out to me. I missed it in a recent issue of The Creative Leisure News. Actually, I read it, but didn't make the connection. She was kind enough to smack me with the "DUH!" board - LOL! Thanks, Angie *she says rubbing the knot on her head*.

From The Creative Leisure News on trends: "The next hot trend will come out of nowhere, just like scrapbooking did." I think the next hot trend will come out of a home party business. Most likely it will happen when a successful company tries to squeeze their sales force with restrictive rules. The party sales women, after learning to how to sell, decide the new rules are too much. They find suppliers and strike out on their own. Later they get tired of lugging product to homes (and with a big mailing list)they open stores. Rubber stamps started that way after Stampin-up raised prices. Scrapbooking came next after Creative Memories decided that their "consultants" couldn't sell
anything but their products." –Rob Bostick,
JudiKins,

WOW! I think I need to introduce myself to Rob. That's pretty much the ScrapBiz story in a nutshell - only it happened 5 years ago. The only difference is that I haven't created products as a result. However...

Very cool that a group of women who all are in the same business are so willing to be helpful to each other. SandraB thank you a million times for telling me about Scrapbiz!!!"

This says it all about ScrapBiz

We have a newish member who actually is taking her SECOND crack at a scrapbook business. Her first was a kit club in 2005 which she finally closed out of frustration and all the challenges of running a business without support. Someone asked her how ScrapBiz is making a difference vs last time and I loved her response. It says it all about what ScrapBiz can do for you!

"There were so many questions when I decided to start my kit club in 2005! I had no idea where to go to get the answers. For instance: Where did I find out the names of all the different scrapbooking wholesalers and how did I contact them? I knew a lot of names because I had been scrapbooking for several years - but there were tons of names I didn't know! I ended up searching google, going to the scrapbook stores and looking at the packaging for website info, looking at trade show websites to see who the vendors were, etc, etc. I didn't even know about distributors until my first trade show!!

There were a lot of questions about the website, hosting company, credit card payments, how to figure shipping, where to get the boxes to ship things in, where to order labels and clear bags, what kind of accounting program to use for kits, how to advertise, what kind of profit margin was needed, how to get good, clear pictures for the website, how to set up a forum and gallery, how to set up an oscommerce shopping cart..........and so on.

I don't think there was a question that I had that I couldn't have gotten an answer to on this board (ScrapBiz) in just a couple of hours or less! But there is so much more here! For instance, the variety of different possibilities for a home-based scrapbooking business is really eye-opening, and if I'm interested in learning more about any one of them, all I have to do is ask.

Also, I have read some really wonderful ideas on marketing, advertising, customer service, contests, crops, newsletters, retreats, logos, taglines, website design, etc. I don't think there is anything that I need to know to make my business a success that I cannot read or ask about at Scrapbiz. I'm thrilled to be a member!"

If you already have an existing business, we can still help. We could have helped to save this member's business in 2005!

A Peek Inside ScrapBiz

Ever wonder what kind of resources you would have access to as a ScrapBiz member? Well, as I was adding new resources to our members-only site today, I realized that I should share the categories from our Info Center here.

Above are just the categories - each category has links to resources. For instance, if you are looking for a great place to host a site, you'll find links. If you are looking for a printer who specializes in printing for the industry, we have links. If you are looking for a way to add podcasts to your site, we have easy-to-use resources and if you are looking for an interactive color wheel to plan pages for kits or clients, we send you to a great one.

You could find all these resources on your own given enough hours of research. Or, you could access them instantly through ScrapBiz. In addition to these resources, you will have access to what is essentially a GIANT Q&A database with 4 years of message board archives. You will also have instant access to nearly 5 years of monthly newsletters. Our newsletter is top-rated by our members!

So, if you are thinking about starting (or even ramping up) a business - Spring is a great time to get going! Check out ScrapBiz for more information

ScrapBiz members speak...

On New Year's Eve, someone started a thread at ScrapBiz about the new year. Some kind words were said about ScrapBiz. If you are on the fence about joining us, please go for it! We have so many members who can't believe they didn't join ScrapBiz sooner. It's not all about what WE provide for our members, but what our members provide for each other in the form of support.

Some of the trade magazines have talked about how they would like to figure out how get stores to stop looking at each other as sworn enemies and start working together for the benefit of everyone. We have that at ScrapBiz! If people are near each other, they work together instead of acting like competition. Even if they AREN'T near each other, they sometimes form partnerships. We have one partnership that was formed by 2 members who had never met. One was in CA and the other was in RI (now she's in WA). They finally just met at Memory Trends last October after being in business together for almost a year. Luckily, they liked each other IRL! The result was Midnight Oil Scrapbook Designs - a new product manufacturer.

Here are some excerpts from that thread:

  • "As I sit here cutting kits for the new show season, I have to look back on the year past. I realized what an important part of my day to day life Scrapbiz is. Strange when you think about the fact that most of us have not met nor probably ever will. I have met a few of you and its always been a highlight of my event when I can. I 'met' my event partner through Scrapbiz and we have already scheduled our second year together shows. I've had the opportunity to visit Wendy's booth and see the amazing talents of those who work for her. I feel truly blessed."

  • "Right there with ya! I couldn't do this without Scrapbiz. I love meeting everyone at the shows. And so many of you have helped me out - and still are, it's wonderful to have this place to come to for support and so much more!"

  • "Scrapbiz is a huge part of my day. I check in pretty much everyday, most of the time more than once. I find advice and support here--both personally and professionally.I've made great business contacts and amazing friendships here."

  • "Scrapbiz is a wonderful resource that I just can't live without! I've met so many friends through Scrapbiz and have had some wonderful business opportunities that I would have never discovered otherwise!"

  • "I wouldn't even have a business if it weren't for ScrapBiz."

  • "I like that everyone kind of has their own spin on their business, so even though we all do similar things, it is way more collaborative than it is competitive. I like that the support here goes beyond just business, and yet on the business end, everyone is great at sharing resources and opportunities, and will give honest feedback."

  • I would not want to even think about what my business life would be without Scrapbiz! I've made some amazing connections, true friendships, and had the best therapy sessions! This begins my third year with Scrapbiz and I know it will be the best!
