Just in Time for National Scrapbook Day!

News reports today indicate that consumer confidence is edging up. Retailers are reporting that while consumers aren't making more shopping trips, they are buying MORE each time they shop. Receipts are getting larger.

So, how do you respond to that? BUNDLE! With National Scrapbook Day coming up, now might be the time to encourage consumers to buy more by putting together some great bundles of products they use the most.

Adhesives, cardstock, pens, and albums are things scrappers buy over and over. Give them a great price on a great pack of products to celebrate a special day!

The Birth of a Scrapper...

I blogged about how cool newbie Scrappers are a few days ago when I was getting ready to have a crop night at my house. Well, I want to introduce you to one of the newest scrappers in the country - this is Marcia and her VERY FIRST SCRAPBOOK PAGE!!!!! I stood by her as she cropped her photos and I helped her choose paper from her stack and loaned her my snowflake punch and gave her the WINTER embellishment. She stamped the date on it and was done!

We had to decide 8 1/2 x 11 vs 12x12. She chose the smaller size for now because she can't imagine filling a 12x12 page nor storing those bigger albums.

I realized how important it is for someone to be there to help a new scrapper. She had purchased a lot of products and tools but was unsure about them AND discovered that maybe she hadn't made the best choice. She was unsure about her adhesive (which was fine - just a tape runner) and frustrated with her trimmer which was one of those personal rotary ones that makes it hard to see exactly where you're trimming. I hauled out my Tonic ones (the 12 inch with the compact base and the smaller one for trimming photos) and she was suddenly IN LOVE. If I (or some other personal memory consultant) had been with her when she shopped, she might not have bought the other trimmer and would have been more confident in her choices.

I hope she'll keep coming to our crop nights and will find her "groove" to scrap all those photos of her two adorable little girls!

Welcome to our world, Marcia!!!

Newbies Rock!!

I am having a crop at my house tomorrow night. It's not really in honor of National Scrapbook Day (although check back later today or tomorrow for a list of ScrapBiz members who are having NSD sales!) It's just my monthly church group crop. The mix of people seems to be constantly changing. Some can come one month while others can come the next month.

Tomorrow, I've got two new scrappers coming. Both are newish moms with a baby and a toddler. Both have the basic supplies but both need the motivation or validation to get started. So, they are going to haul their stuff to my house tomorrow night and I'm going to get them started.

Scrapping won't die as long as there are women having children. I would venture to say that these two women are exactly the women that retailers should be courting into the industry. They probably took a ton of photos of their first child but never really did anything with them and figured they would decide what to do later on.

Then they had another child and after a few months of adjustment, they are into the groove of being a mother of two. They have discovered they are less mobile with TWO kids to get in and out of the car. They also usually have a couple of hours of nap time available to them each day that becomes precious "me time". They are also feeling the need to do something with the photos from child #1 as they see the photos from child #2 piling on top. And, they have a strong desire to accomplish something every day besides changing diapers and picking up toys. It can be frustrating to end the day in the same cluttered state that you started it in. I always tell young mothers to do something "permanent" EVERY DAY that they can see real progress in when they go to bed at night. Scrapbooking can be that thing.

So, where can you find these young mothers who are ready to start preserving the stories of their childrens' lives? Children's play gyms? Daycare? Mommy and Me Groups? We need to find these moms and extend an invitation to them to join us. Bringing new scrappers like these two into the industry is vital to our continued growth.

And, for me personally, it's just FUN to teach women how to find their scrapping style! I can't wait to see their very first pages!!!

National Scrapbook Day and National Photo Month

National Scrapbook Day is this coming Saturday. Actually, though, it seems to be turning into National Scrapbook Month. Actually, I'd take that one step further and call it INTERNATIONAL Scrapbook Month. Scrapbooking is a hobby practiced around the world by women (and men) interested in preserving family photos and the stories behind them. It's interesting to me that May is also National Photo Month sponsored by the Photo Marketing Association International. It makes sense to me for retailers in the scrapbook industry to promote National Photo Month along with National Scrapbook Day (Month). Afterall, photos are the reason most of us scrap.

Along side the regular National Scrapbook Day activities, you could add classes on taking great photos, backing up digital photos, using photo editing software, making digital books, etc. You could also carry a line of camera bags from fun companies such as Jill-E. You could have a photo contest along with your layout contest. Partner with a local photographer and have a picture party in your store where scrappers can bring their kids for a 15-minute photo session with a professional photographer. There are all sorts of complimentary activities you could add that would make sense and stretch the celebration of all things scrapbooking through the entire month.

Contrast this with National Craft Month sponsored by The Craft and Hobby Association. It's in March and, frankly, I have never seen or heard of a scrapbook store who even cared let alone promoted it. Their national spokesperson is a crafter, not a scrapbooker. Most scrapbook businesses don't consider themselves a craft retailer anymore than a model train/hobby store does. We are a specialty hobby and the Craft Month promotions simply don't apply. I've always been sort of puzzled when March rolls around the the National Craft Month promotions from CHA start hitting my email box. It doesn't apply to us.

But, National Photo Month is something we can and should embrace. There is lots of cross-over into the scrapbook industry.

Later this week I will post some National Scrapbook Day sales that ScrapBiz members are having . Check back for some great deals!

Territorialism

I was watching the Celebrity Apprentice last night with Mark. The two teams had to set up an art gallery and sell art. The team who sold the most, won the competition. One team had the front part of the gallery, the other had the back room. The back room team (who WON) had to work extra hard to get patrons to come back to their room - especially since Omarosa, the Apprentice-wanna-be that everyone loves to hate - was standing in front of the door with her arm out directing people into their room and preventing them from going into the other one.

At one point, Carol Alt essentially stole a big-money contact from the other team and closed a sale. That set off some wailing and gnashing of teeth at the end. Hey, this guy didn't buy anything from his contact. Their choice of art may not have been his "thing".

That got me thinking about the collaboration and territorialism that sometimes happens in our industry. I put it only in the context of The Apprentice to start the conversation. We certainly aren't in a cut-throat "reality" TV competition with other businesses around us. But, we ARE in business to sell products.

I have heard at times about different consultants from different direct sales companies coming together to hold events. I think it's likely to happen on National Scrapbook Day more than any other time as scrapbook and stamp companies all look for a way to celebrate. I have also heard at times, that although in THEORY everyone possesses the understanding that a customer is a customer that day, that occasionally, some consultants pop corks when they see their customers buying products from other consultants. I have also heard torrid tales of consultants from the same company laying hold of the same customer and essentially "duking" it out over that person.

That is so ridiculous and does nothing but make the consultants involved look bad.

First of all, customers have a right to buy from anyone they choose. If I buy a punch from you at an event, I probably don't consider you "my consultant" the way you consider me your customer. I might buy another punch from a different consultant 2 months later and that's my right. Now, if you win my loyalty through other means, then I'll probably bring my business back to you. Otherwise, you're no different to me (as a customer) than any other consultant.

Secondly, if you believe your customers should be (and can be) shielded from other businesses, then don't selfishly participate in group activities and think your customers will put on their blinders and only buy from you. And, don't get mad at the other businesses for selling to them. Again, customers have a right to buy from anyone they choose to. What you're really saying is that you don't like to acknowledge that your customers are buying from other people. It's hard for you to watch. But remember, the "customers" of the other business owners there are probably dropping some dollars with you, also. It goes both ways.

Third, don't expect to pack up your customer list at the end of the day and take it all home again. Some consultants get upset when other business owners at these events contact "their" customers. If someone buys something from me, they become MY customer also. At that point, I have every right to market to them and try to get them to buy more. Again, if you don't like that idea, don't sign up to go. And, remember also that you have a bunch of new customers in your files, too.

I think for far too long, retailers of all sorts in this industry have had the misguided idea that they should be the ONLY retailer a customer buys from. Therefore, collaboration has been largely absent in the industry. There might be 50 consultants from the same company in a 5 mile radius or 3 LSS's, but instead of coming together to be the rising tide that could lift all boats, they spend too much time infiltrating and tattling on each other.

I love the idea of group events and shop-hops. Let shine what makes your business unique and be confident enough in your own uniqueness so as to not feel threatened by competition! Embrace the fact that you are different. Even if you are a consultant and carry the same lines as 20 other women in your area, you can still make your business unique. The "IT" factor is YOU! Your customers become loyal to you not only because of what you carry, but because of the service you provide.

Collaboration is really what ScrapBiz is all about. Each business owner has their own "Secret Sauce", but overall, we freely talk about ideas that can help everyone. I love that part best about ScrapBiz! All opinions are recognized and welcomed. And, even if there is not agreement, there is no smacking.

National Scrapbook Day at ScrapBiz

It's coming - very soon - NSD! Traditionally, it's celebrated the first Saturday in May. It was started by Creative Memories, but last year, they decided to rename their celebration a MEMORANZA. It still gives me a chuckle.

Anyway, the official ScrapBiz version of that is SWEET MEMORIES and we have quite a few members firing up some form of a Sweet Memories event during the month of May.

Here's the ScrapBiz Press Release for Sweet Memories. You can also listen to it by clicking the player down the left side of the page near the Sweet Memories logo.

ScrapBiz Members Create “Sweet Memories” on National Scrapbook Day.

Recent studies indicate that eating chocolate may improve memory function. Chocolate will be on hand to help scrappers preserve their memories on May 5, as ScrapBiz members across the US, Canada and Australia celebrate “National Scrapbook Day” during the 2nd Annual “Sweet Memories” Event. Plenty of chocolate and great products will be readily available on that day of scrapbooking and sweets.

“Sweet Memories” is an event created and sponsored by Seattle-based ScrapBiz (www.ScrapBiz.com), which offers independent scrapbook businesses consulting, training and support services through their scrapbook business startup guide and innovative online small business incubator.

“ScrapBiz Business members are celebrating this day in a variety of ways from crops and classes in their own communities to special deals at large-scale conventions and at their online stores,” says ScrapBiz Founder Kim Guymon. “Exclusively designed chocolate-themed products from several ScrapBiz member manufacturers will also be offered at these events. The theme for the day is chocolate and memories – it doesn’t get any better than that for scrapping chocoholics!”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ScrapBiz Business Members Celebrate National Scrapbooking Day by Giving Scrapbookers Their “Just Desserts”

Weight-conscious Scrappers may want to ditch the calorie counters the first week in May as ScrapBiz Members celebrate both “National Scrapbook Day” and “Eat Dessert First Week”. Independent Scrapbook businesses who are part of the ScrapBiz Business network will be sponsoring a variety of activities during the 1st Annual “Sweet Memories Event”

“Sweet Memories” is sponsored by Seattle-based ScrapBiz (www.ScrapBiz.com), which offers independent scrapbook businesses a variety of consulting, training and support services.

Once the domain of sentimental grandmothers equipped with Elmer’s Glue, family snapshots and blank albums, scrapbooking has become one of America’s hottest hobbies. Nationwide, scrapbooking has grown from a $1.5 billion industry in 2001 to more than $2.5 billion and growing, according to the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA).

“This celebration may seem like light news (except for the desserts),” says ScrapBiz founder Kim Guymon, “but ‘Sweet Memories’ highlights the importance of preserving our memories. Our members and their customers are helping to preserve and interpret family histories in ways that are more appealing to the younger generation. Every scrapper is an individual History Channel.”

For more information about the “Sweet Memories Event” or ScrapBiz, visit www.ScrapBiz.com, or contact Kim Guymon at Kim@ScrapBiz.com.
