Oh, and here's my PSA about Direct Sales Companies...

PULLLLEEEEEEZZZZEEEEE! I'm begging you - if you are currently a consultant for Leaving Prints (or any other scrapbook direct sales company) and are sitting your house thinking, "Hey, what an opportunity! I can do it BETTER!", then get up, walk into your garage, pick up a piece of wood and WHACK yourself over the head with it. It's commonly known as a "Whack with a 'DUH!' board" at our house. It's what you do when you get some weird, crazy idea that you KNOW won't work, but sounds like fun. The DUH board is supposed to pop you back into reality.

There are so many reasons why this is a bad idea. I can't even begin to list them. Please just let the idea go and move on - I don't want to see this happen anymore.

You have to strike while the iron's hot, so the speak. And, the iron (or the scrapbook industry), while still warm, isn't red-hot any more. The profit margins for a direct sales company are too small to fufill all the promises a DS company makes. Success is somewhat temporary and depends on fast, explosive growth and when the honeymoon period is over and the growth slows, the cash dries up and you start having to "rob Peter to pay Paul" and you can't sustain that very long.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

When oh when are people going to realize that you cannot build a successful and sustainable business around a SINGLE company or product?

Eventually the bottom is going to fall out of that product (or product line) and you are left holding a pile of obsolete goods.

When you have to 'play by the rules' of a parent company or head office, you will never win, because they will keep changing the rules! And when they go down, they're taking you with them. And they don't care!!!

You are not in the business of 'selling scrapbooking supplies' if your profits are earned by recruiting and promoting others. If you can earn a check every month without selling a single piece of paper, you are part of a MLM pyramid scheme. The retail product you *offer* for sale is simply there to make it a legal pyramid.

Jumping ship? Good for you! Tying yourself to another sinking ship (Direct Sales Company)? Not so bright. Why would you think it will be any better when they're all built upon the same shaky business model???

Whew! That felt good!

Erika, there's ALWAYS someone thinking it will work for them! I should do a family tree of direct sales companies. The newer ones are all offshoots of a former or current one. It's quite comical. People need to understand that it's a risky venture. It's not easy and it's not the ticket to your success. After the honeymoon period is over, you drop like a rock... and LP is the result.
